Types of Iranian Bitumen & Technical Features

• Penetration Grade Bitumen: This is the most common type, classified by a standard needle penetration test, measured in 1/10 of a millimeter. Popular grades include 60/70, 80/100, and 85/100. These are widely used in moderate and high-traffic climates due to their balanced consistency and durability, making them ideal for road construction and paving.
• Oxidized Bitumen: Also known as blown bitumen, this type is produced by passing air through hot bitumen, which alters its chemical properties. This process significantly enhances its oxidation and aging resistance, making it exceptionally suitable for applications such as waterproofing rooftops and protecting oil pipelines from corrosion and environmental damage.
• Polymer-Modified Bitumen (PMB): This advanced form of bitumen is enhanced with polymers like SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) or SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber). The addition of these polymers dramatically improves its flexibility and crack resistance, making PMB an ideal choice for regions experiencing extreme temperature variations, such as Russia and China, where traditional bitumen might fail due to thermal stress.
• Bitumen Emulsion: This product is a stable mixture of bitumen, water, and an emulsifying agent. Its key advantage is that it can be used without high heating, making it a more environmentally friendly and safer option for application. Bitumen emulsion is particularly effective in humid areas and for quick road repairs, as it sets relatively quickly and requires less energy for application.

Target Export Markets for Iranian Bitumen

Iran’s strategic geographical location and competitive pricing have allowed it to establish strong footholds in several major export markets for bitumen:

• Iraq: As a neighboring country undergoing significant post-war reconstruction, Iraq imports over 200,000 tons of bitumen annually from Iran. Iran commands a substantial 40% market share in Iraq, primarily due to its competitive pricing and the convenience of easy land transport, facilitating consistent and cost-effective supply for their extensive infrastructure projects.
• UAE: The United Arab Emirates has seen increasing use of Iranian PMB in crucial infrastructure projects, including inter-emirate highways and the expansion of the Dubai airport. This growing demand has contributed to a notable 15% increase in bitumen exports from Iran to the UAE over the past five years, highlighting the high regard for Iranian bitumen quality in demanding applications.
• China: With its continuous expansion of intercity roads and vast infrastructural development, China has emerged as Iran’s second-largest bitumen importer in Asia. The 85/100 penetration grade is particularly sought after in China, as it aligns perfectly with the country’s strict durability standards for road construction, ensuring long-lasting and resilient road networks.
• Turkey & Russia: Given their harsh winters and extreme cold temperatures, both Turkey and Russia have a specific requirement for high-softening-point PMB. This specialized bitumen is crucial for maintaining road integrity in freezing conditions. Iran consistently exports approximately 50,000 tons of PMB annually to these markets, addressing their unique climatic and infrastructural needs.
